Biography

Linda Fiorentino is an American actress who broke through in 1985, taking the lead in the coming-of-age drama Vision Quest (1985) and appearing the same year in the espionage comedy Gotcha! and in Martin Scorsese's After Hours (1985). Born in Philadelphia, she studied acting at the Circle in the Square school in New York after a professor urged her toward the stage. Alan Rudolph cast her in The Moderns (1988), and she won New York Film Critics Circle and Independent Spirit awards, a London Film Critics' Circle prize and a BAFTA nomination as the murderous Bridget in the neo-noir The Last Seduction (1994). Leads followed in the thriller Jade (1995), the science fiction comedy Men in Black (1997), which earned her a Blockbuster Entertainment Award nomination, and Dogma (1999). Her final screen part came in Once More with Feeling (2009).

Did you know?!

  1. A role that slipped away

Fiorentino was approached by Tom Cruise and director Tony Scott to play Charlie Blackwood in Top Gun, but she turned it down over the film's pro-military stance, and Kelly McGillis got the part.

  2. Big break

Fiorentino drove six hours to meet director John Dahl and told him he was not allowed to hire anyone but her for the role of Bridget in The Last Seduction.

  3. Behind the award

Fiorentino's performance earned her Best Actress honors from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Independent Spirit Awards and the London Film Critics' Circle. She was also nominated for a BAFTA, but because the film aired on television before its cinematic release, she could not get an Oscar nomination.

  4. A role that slipped away

According to producer Laurie MacDonald, Fiorentino's character was dropped from Men in Black II (2002) because the part was not big enough. The film instead brought back Tommy Lee Jones as co-lead and partner to Will Smith's character.
