Plot summary
Captain Zebulon Hedge, Captain Jeremiah Burgess and Captain Perez Ryder are retired sea captains who share a house on Cape Cod in 1905, living in genteel squalor. Wanting to improve their fortunes, they plan for one of them to advertise in a Boston newspaper for an attractive, middle-aged bride. The loser of a coin toss is the man who must marry, and the other two are to move in as his boarders. Women answer the advertisement, and from the applicants the captains choose a bride who lives on Nantucket. When she arrives on Cape Cod, the three captains get cold feet.
