Plot summary
Air traffic controller Jack Chester nearly causes a mid-air collision and is given five weeks of paid leave rather than being fired. He takes his wife Sandy and their children Jennifer, Bobby and Laurie from Atlanta to Citrus Cove, Florida, for a summer vacation, and the trip begins badly. At a seafood restaurant the family is passed over in line for Al Pellet, a seven-time local sailing champion who becomes Jack's rival. They eat at The Barnacle, a pirate ship-themed restaurant run by Scully, then move into the wrong house and must leave during the night.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Summer Rental (1985)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The film was developed at Paramount by Barry Diller, Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, all of whom left the studio before it was made; new studio president Ned Tanen greenlit it anyway, saying there was "a vacant spot of about six months on our release schedule".
- The story came from a summer holiday Bernie Brillstein spent in a rented beach house in Southern California, flanked, he said, by one house "out of Arsenic and Old Lace" and another "out of Death in Venice".
- Candy and Reiner got on so well that they planned another Paramount film together, The Last Holiday, which was never made; in a 1986 interview Candy said he was paid $800,000 for the role.
- Candy told Gene Siskel in 1986 that the production was rushed, saying "We shot it too fast" and that they were trying to fill a time slot for Paramount.
- The Barnacle Restaurant used in the film is still in use today as Billy's Stone Crab and Lobster near Pass-A-Grille, Florida.
