Plot summary
Monroe "Eagle" Cole has finished two terms as president and his marriage has ended, so he settles into the vacation house he keeps in Mooseport, Maine. When the town's mayor dies, the council asks the former president to take over, and Cole accepts, since the office would let his house stand as his workplace and keep it out of the divorce settlement. Harold "Handy" Harrison, owner of the local hardware store and Mooseport's plumber, had also been put forward for the post. His long working hours have left Sally Mannis, the town veterinarian, close to ending their relationship. Handy decides to drop out of the race, but after he watches Cole make a pass at Sally he stays on the ballot, believing that becoming mayor can win back Sally's heart.
