Biography
Mackenzie Crook is an English actor, comedian, writer and director who was born in Maidstone and grew up in Dartford, Kent. He began on the comedy circuit with characters including Mr Bagshaw and Charlie Cheese, then won the role of Gareth Keenan in The Office, earning a British Comedy Award nomination for Best Comedy Breakthrough Artist. He played Ragetti in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006) and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007). His film work also includes The Merchant of Venice (2004), Finding Neverland (2004), The Brothers Grimm (2005) and The Adventures of Tintin (2011). On television he played Orell in Game of Thrones and wrote, directed and starred in Detectorists, winning a British Academy Television Craft Award for his writing on the comedy. He was nominated for a Tony Award for Jerusalem.

Behind the camera
In 2015 Crook received a British Academy Television Craft Award for Best Writing in a Comedy Series for Detectorists, the television comedy he wrote, directed and starred in, which first aired on BBC Four.
First role
In 1998 Crook got his first big television part, as a comedy sketch contributor on Channel 4's The Eleven O'Clock Show. He was dropped from the show later on.
A change of course
Crook created two characters, Mr. Bagshaw and Charlie Cheese, and performed as them on the comedy circuit after he moved to London. Bob Mortimer spotted him at shows at the Edinburgh Fringe.
