Plot summary
Alice Kingsleigh has spent three years sailing her father's ship, and back in London she learns that Hamish Ascot controls his late father's company and her family home, and will return the house only if she signs the ship away. A butterfly she knows as Absolem leads her through a mirror into Wonderland, where her friends say Tarrant Hightopp, the Mad Hatter, has not been himself. A small blue hat he made as a child convinces him his family survived the Jabberwocky's attack on Horunvendush Day, and Alice calls that impossible. The White Queen sends her to Time's castle to ask for the Chronosphere, a device that steers the ocean of time, and warns that history breaks if a person meets their own past self. Time refuses to change what has happened, and Alice takes the Chronosphere anyway.

- To promote the film on May 11, 2016, Johnny Depp appeared at Disneyland as the Mad Hatter, surprising unsuspecting guests by standing in place of one of the park's digitized character poster billboards.
- Filming at Gloucester Docks in August 2014 used at least four historic ships, including the Earl of Pembroke, which was renamed The Wonder for the shoot; Kathleen and May, Irene and Excelsior were also used.
- Toby Jones and John Sessions were originally announced to voice Wilkins and Humpty Dumpty, but the roles were eventually given to Matt Vogel and Wally Wingert.
- Director James Bobin avoided making Time a 'straight-up bad guy', calling that 'a bit dull' since the Red Queen already filled that role; he made Time a 'twit' and said the part was 'very much with Sacha Baron Cohen in mind'.
- Alan Rickman's part in the film was his final film role; he reprised his character from Alice in Wonderland (2010) alongside returning cast members Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter.
