Plot summary

Freddy Krueger has wiped out nearly every child and teenager in Springwood, Ohio. John Doe, the only one left, wakes just outside the town limits with a head injury and no memory of his own name. Police bring him to a shelter for troubled youth, where Dr. Maggie Burroughs takes him on as a patient. In his pocket she finds a newspaper clipping from Springwood, and to try to cure his amnesia she plans a road trip there. Three residents, Spencer, Carlos and Tracy, are already set on running away to California, and they hide in the van.

As a publicity stunt New Line Cinema held a mock funeral for Freddy Krueger at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, attended by series figures including Alice Cooper, Lisa Zane and Lisa Wilcox, and Los Angeles mayor Tom Bradley declared September 13 "Freddy Krueger Day", a move heavily criticized for glorifying a mass murderer.
Peter Jackson wrote a screenplay for the film that was not used: his story had teenagers who did not see Freddy as a threat taking sleeping pills to enter Freddy's world, and a police officer put into a comatose state to be trapped there permanently.
While the film was being processed in 3D, the lab developing the print accidentally sent the production a two-second clip from the then-unreleased Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
Lisa Zane said she had submitted a James Bond-esque ballad called "The Worst Is Over" for use over the end credits, but "Why Was I Born" was chosen instead; Rachel Talalay had worked with Iggy Pop on Cry-Baby and offered him the chance to compose a song.
Rachel Talalay said the original cut ran long, so several sequences were removed or significantly shortened, with around 47 minutes of footage taken out of the final print.
In the original script the major character was 15-year-old Jacob Johnson, son of the previous film's Alice Johnson, with many of the dream warriors from Dream Warriors returning to help him defeat Freddy after he kills Alice; the idea was later discarded.
