Plot summary
On a billboard of a masked model, where a young man in a hat, mask and cape has climbed to jump, psychiatrist Jack Mickler talks him down by posing as the nobleman Don Octavio de Flores. The young man, twenty-one-year-old John Arnold DeMarco, holds that he is Don Juan and that he has seduced women through his conviction of who he is. He is held for ten days at Woodhaven State Hospital, and Mickler, near retirement, insists on conducting the evaluation and does not medicate him, listening instead to the tale of Don Juan's boyhood in Mexico and an affair with his tutor. John takes Mickler for Don Octavio. In the ward his presence stirs the staff, and at home the marriage of Mickler and his wife Marilyn has lost its passion.

- Singer Selena appears briefly as a performer in the film; it turned out to be her only film role, since she was murdered on March 31, 1995, just seven days before the movie's release.
- Tori Amos and Michael Stipe recorded a duet for the film, titled 'It Might Hurt a Bit,' but it was never released.
- Bryan Adams' song "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman?", whose lyrics incorporate quotes from Depp's character, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song at the 68th Academy Awards, but lost to "Colors of the Wind" from Pocahontas.
- The modern-day story comes from screenwriter Jeremy Leven's short story "Don Juan DeMarco and the Centerfold", which was the movie's title until the studio changed it shortly before release, while the flashbacks draw on Lord Byron's version of the Don Juan legend.
- Johnny Depp won the London Film Critics Circle Award for Actor of the Year partly on the strength of this role, shared with his performance the same year in Ed Wood.
