Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Jeanne du Barry (2023)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Maïwenn wrote Jeanne du Barry with an unnamed French actor in mind, but after three years of writing he turned the script down within minutes, saying "cinema is dead" and that "only Netflix" remained; the next French actor she offered it to had health problems and could not play it.
  • After Johnny Depp lost his libel trial against The Sun in November 2020, Maïwenn was unsure whether he would stay with the project; when she called him she found he feared she would no longer want him, and she told him the film would not go on without him.
  • Johnny Depp agreed to play Louis XV without reading the script himself, accepting immediately after his assistant and friend Stephen Deuters, a screenwriter and producer, read it and fell in love with it.
  • Maïwenn found it so challenging to direct the film while playing Jeanne du Barry herself that, at the end of the shoot, she decided she would never again act in a film she was directing.
  • For the first time in her career, Maïwenn shot a feature on 35 mm film, using Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon as the visual template for what she wanted to achieve.
