Plot summary
Elise Clifton-Ward is trailed through Paris by French police working with Scotland Yard, whose Inspector John Acheson has hunted Alexander Pearce for years. Pearce is her lover and owes a fortune in back taxes; he is also wanted by Reginald Shaw, a mobster whose $2.3 billion he took. At a café Elise gets written instructions from Pearce: travel to Venice, choose a man, and make the police think he is Pearce. She burns the note and boards the train, where she picks Frank Tupelo, who teaches mathematics at a community college in Wisconsin, shares dinner with him and invites him to her Venice hotel. An officer on Shaw's payroll has told Shaw that Pearce is on that train, and Shaw heads for Venice.

- Lasse Hallström was first set to direct with Charlize Theron in the female lead; after he left, Tom Cruise was announced, then replaced by Sam Worthington. When Angelina Jolie accepted, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck joined, left over "creative differences", then returned to re-write the script in two weeks and shoot in 58 days with Johnny Depp.
- At the 2011 Golden Globe Awards Ricky Gervais made fun of the film, so in a scripted encounter on Life's Too Short, Johnny Depp reminded him it had grossed $278 million, against the $27 million and $32 million taken by Gervais's Ghost Town and The Invention of Lying.
- The film was originally submitted by the studio as a drama, but Henckel von Donnersmarck told the HFPA it should be a comedy; president Phil Berk said they screened it in advance and decided its "elements of preposterous fun" lent it more to comedy.
- Stunt coordinator Simon Crane devised the boat sequence around the speed limits imposed on boats in Venice, strictly enforced by the authorities, with a policeman on set at all times to make sure no wave movement exposed the pillars the palazzi are built on to oxygen.
- The whole film was made in only a little over 11 months, from the day Henckel von Donnersmarck came on board to the New York premiere, because Depp had to leave for Hawaii to start filming the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
