Plot summary
In London, the terminally ill American writer Samson Young swaps apartments with a fellow novelist, Mark Asprey, and the cab driver Keith Talent drives him to his new flat and then to a pub called the Black Cross. There Samson meets Guy Clinch, the head of his family's business, who is stuck in a loveless marriage to Hope and struggles with a destructive son. Nicola Six walks in from a funeral. Keith flirts with her, Guy plays the gentleman and Samson watches, fascinated. When Samson finds books she has thrown away, he comes to believe Nicola can foresee how people die, and he asks to put her at the center of the novel he is writing. She lives in the flat above his, and she agrees.

- The film grossed $168,575 in the United States on its opening weekend from 613 theaters, a per-screen average of $261, which made it the second worst US box office opening for a wide release film of all time, behind only Proud American in 2008.
- In November 2016 the producers sued Amber Heard for $10 million, claiming she and Cullen made unauthorised script changes and failed to finish voice-over work. Heard countersued, saying they violated a nudity clause by filming with a body double and digitally replacing the double's face with hers.
- David Cronenberg was approached in 2001 to adapt the book, and Amis wrote a draft of the script, but Cronenberg left for A History of Violence and Eastern Promises. David Mackenzie and Michael Winterbottom were also approached before the film entered production with Mathew Cullen in September 2013.
