Plot summary
Dr. Will Caster's field is sapience, artificial intelligence included, and he predicts that a machine with a mind of its own will bring what he calls Transcendence. With his wife Evelyn he works to build one. A radical anti-technology group attacks artificial intelligence laboratories, and a member shoots Will with a polonium-laced bullet. He has a month at most to live. Evelyn proposes uploading his consciousness into the quantum computer the project has developed, and Max Waters, a fellow researcher and his best friend, argues that the copy would only imitate the man.

- By October 2012 Johnny Depp was in negotiations to star in Transcendence, and The Hollywood Reporter said he would receive a salary of $20 million plus 15 percent of the film's gross.
- Before the leads were settled, director Wally Pfister met with Noomi Rapace for the film's female lead role and with James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire for the other male lead role, and offered Christoph Waltz a supporting part.
- Director Wally Pfister performed an uncredited rewrite of Jack Paglen's screenplay, writing eight drafts of the script himself.
