Plot summary
Victor Van Dort and Victoria Everglot are strangers whose parents have arranged their marriage: it lifts the Van Dort family's social standing and restores the Everglot fortune. At the rehearsal Victor forgets his vows, drops the ring and sets his future mother-in-law's dress alight. He flees into a forest, rehearses the words alone and places the ring on what he takes for a root. The root is the finger of Emily, a woman in a wedding gown who rises from the ground and declares herself his wife. She carries him to the Land of the Dead, where the spirits of the deceased reside. Victoria waits above, and her parents, believing Victor has abandoned her, look for another match.

- Corpse Bride was inspired by "The Finger", a 17th-century Jewish folktale written down by Howard Schwartz, which Joe Ranft brought to Tim Burton while they were finishing The Nightmare Before Christmas.
- Rather than the 35 mm film cameras used for The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride was shot with Canon EOS-1D Mark II digital SLRs.
- According to Tim Burton, the voice cast never worked together in a room; everyone recorded separately except Albert Finney and Joanna Lumley, who did a few scenes together.
- Tim Burton said Johnny Depp was playing Willy Wonka by day on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and voicing Victor by night, a double shift he called "a little schizophrenic" for the actor.
- Corpse Bride was the first stop-motion feature Tim Burton directed, after producing The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and James and the Giant Peach (1996).
- Corpse Bride is dedicated to its executive producer Joe Ranft, who died one month before the film's release.
