Plot summary
Uncle Leo is marrying a much younger woman in Arizona and wants his nephew Axel there for the wedding. Leo also wants Axel to give up tagging fish in New York and stay to run the family Cadillac business; Axel hesitates, then decides to try selling cars. He brings with him a dream of an Inuit who lands a rare halibut and takes it home to an igloo. Then he meets Elaine Stalker, who has always dreamed of building a flying machine, and Grace, who is Elaine's stepdaughter and jealous of her. Axel sets out to help Elaine make the machine real.

- Filming took a year because director Emir Kusturica suffered a nervous breakdown; Johnny Depp's hair length keeps changing because of this.
- The original edit, titled American Dreams, ran four hours long and was trimmed to 2 hours 22 minutes for the theatrical release as Arizona Dream.
