Trailer

Plot summary

At nineteen, Alice Kingsleigh lives under Victorian London's expectations, troubled by recurring dreams and the death of her father. When Hamish Ascot proposes at his family's garden party, she slips away from the crowd. A white rabbit in a waistcoat, pocket watch in hand, crosses her path; she follows it down a rabbit hole into a room of doors. A cake marked Eat Me makes her grow; a bottle marked Drink Me shrinks her. She fits through a tiny door into Underland, where the White Rabbit, a Dormouse, the Dodo, Talking Flowers and Tweedledum and Tweedledee greet her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Alice in Wonderland (2010)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The Mad Hatter's orange hair alludes to the mercury poisoning suffered by hatters who used mercury to cure felt, and Depp believed his character "was poisoned ... and it was coming out through his hair, through his fingernails and eyes".
  • Bonham Carter, who was then Burton's domestic partner, recalled that after he formally asked her to come to a meeting at his office, she thought he was going to propose marriage - until he showed her one of his character sketches and offered her the role.
  • Filming of the green screen portions, which made up 90% of the film, was completed in only 40 days; many of the cast and crew felt nauseated from the long hours surrounded by greenscreen, and Burton had lavender lenses fitted into his glasses to counteract the effect.
  • The role of Alice was originally going to be offered to Frances Bean Cobain, who turned it down because she wanted to focus on her college studies; Lindsay Lohan expressed interest in February 2008, and Jennifer Lawrence, Cara Delevingne and Jessica Brown Findlay all auditioned, with Brown Findlay down to the last three.
  • Burton said Michael Gough was the first person he thought of to voice Uilleam the Dodo Bird, for the "full life quality" of his voice; the character speaks only three lines, and it proved Gough's final acting role, as he died a year after release, aged 94.
  • Rickman was originally going to have his face composited onto the animated Caterpillar and was filmed recording his voice in the studio, but the idea was eventually scrapped; the animators still gave Absolem's face characteristics similar to Rickman's.
  • James Cameron, who had released his own 3D film Avatar in December 2009, criticized the choice, saying: "It doesn't make any sense to shoot in 2D and convert to 3D."
  • The film generated over $1.025 billion in ticket sales, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film during its theatrical run and the second-highest-grossing film of 2010; among Disney's live-action adaptations it is tied with Mulan as the third most expensive.
