Plot summary

Richard Brown teaches literature at a New England college. A doctor tells him he has stage 4 lung cancer and gives him six months without treatment, perhaps eighteen with it. He goes home meaning to tell his wife Veronica and his daughter Olivia, but at dinner Olivia announces she is a lesbian, Veronica brushes the news aside, and then Veronica admits she is having an affair with the college dean, Henry Wright. Richard says nothing about his diagnosis. On campus he offers a passing grade to any student who wants to leave his class, keeps only those who show real interest, and lets his behavior turn erratic. He tells his colleague Peter, the department chair, and asks for a sabbatical.
