Plot summary
Jacob Asch is asked by Gerald McMurty to find the man's former wife and their son. The search brings Jacob to Palm Springs, where Laine is living with a teenage boy named Donnie Fleischer. Whether Donnie is Gerald's child is unclear. Donnie is rich and perceptive, a boy who only wants to be loved. Deceit and betrayal surround Laine and the boy, and people begin to die. Jacob works it out on his own, set on learning who is doing the killing and why.
