Plot summary
Three months after Gellert Grindelwald escapes custody, Newt Scamander asks the British Ministry of Magic to lift his travel ban. He learns that Credence Barebone, the Obscurial he believed dead, is alive in Paris and that Grindelwald wants to find him. The Ministry offers to restore Newt's rights if he assists his brother Theseus in the search; he refuses. Albus Dumbledore gives him the same charge, saying he himself cannot move against Grindelwald. Newt's friends Jacob Kowalski and Queenie Goldstein arrive from New York, and Queenie's enchantment over Jacob is discovered. Queenie leaves for Paris alone, and Newt and Jacob follow. There Credence travels with Circus Arcanus beside Nagini, a performer cursed to become a serpent, while the Auror Tina Goldstein hunts for him.

- Johnny Depp was cast as the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald, and the choice drew criticism from some fans over domestic violence allegations against him. In December 2017, J. K. Rowling said she would not recast the role, calling Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard's agreement a reason to move on.
- Jude Law was cast as Albus Dumbledore because director David Yates wanted a younger actor than Michael Gambon, who had played Dumbledore in six Harry Potter films. Christian Bale, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Strong and Jared Harris were among the other actors considered.
- A part of Paris, including streets, alleys and a square, was built at Warner Bros. Studios, Leavesden, in Hertfordshire for the film. The New York set from the first Fantastic Beasts film had been built in exactly the same spot.
- Johnny Depp came up with the idea of giving Gellert Grindelwald heterochromia, saying he saw the wizard as "more than one [...] almost as though he was two people."
- Mads Mikkelsen was announced in November 2020 as Grindelwald for the sequel, replacing Johnny Depp, whom Warner Bros. had asked to resign after the verdict in the Depp v News Group Newspapers Ltd court case.
