Lord Charlie Mortdecai, who deals in art and cheats for a living, is cornered in Hong Kong by the gangster Fang, one of the people he has fleeced, and his manservant Jock pulls him clear. Back in London, he and his wife Johanna weigh how to settle a tax bill they cannot pay. A Goya is then taken from Oxford in a theft that leaves an art restorer dead. Inspector Alistair Martland, in love with Johanna since their college days, asks Mortdecai's help and offers him a tenth of the insurance payout. Emil Strago is his chief suspect.
