Plot summary
At a 1933 funfair in San Francisco, a boy named Will, who idolizes the Lone Ranger, meets Tonto, an elderly Comanche man who begins telling him about the Old West 64 years earlier. In 1869, lawyer John Reid rides the unfinished transcontinental railroad home to Colby, Texas, where railroad tycoon Latham Cole oversees construction. The same train carries Tonto in shackles and the outlaw Butch Cavendish, bound for his hanging after John's brother Dan, a Texas Ranger, caught him. Cavendish's gang boards, frees him, chains John to Tonto and derails the train. Dan deputizes John, gives him their late father's silver badge, and leads six Rangers after Cavendish.

SPOILER
When Alan F. Horn took over as chairman of Walt Disney Studios in 2012 he went straight at the film and insisted that most of the scene in which the outlaw Butch Cavendish eats Dan Reid's heart be trimmed. His explanation: "I like heart in my movies... but not that much heart."- An earlier attempt at the film, announced by Columbia Pictures in 2002 with producers Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, was pitched in the vein of The Mask of Zorro on a projected budget of $70 million, and the studio suggested rewriting Tonto as a female love interest.
- The shoot ran into bad weather, wildfires and an outbreak of chickenpox, and in September 2012 a crew member working as a water safety expert died inside a large water tank. Several of the cast had to be formally trained in horseback riding, gunslinging and lassoing.
- Industrial Light & Magic built a computer-generated Golden Gate Bridge for the framing story, rendering it half-finished as it looked in 1936, even though the scene it appears in is set in 1933.
- Johnny Depp speaks Comanche as Tonto, a language with only 25 to 30 living native speakers in 2013. Todd McDaniels, a linguist at Comanche Nation College, assessed the attempt: "The words were there, the pronunciation was shaky, but adequate."
