Geoffrey Rush
Biography
Geoffrey Rush is an Australian actor, born in Toowoomba, Queensland, who is known for playing eccentric characters on stage and screen. He first worked with Brisbane's Queensland Theatre Company in 1971, then trained at the Jacques Lecoq school in Paris, and later appeared in productions of Oleanna and Waiting for Godot. His film breakthrough came with Shine (1996), which won him the Academy Award for Best Actor, and he was Oscar-nominated again for Shakespeare in Love (1998), Quills (2000) and The King's Speech (2010). He played Captain Hector Barbossa across the Pirates of the Caribbean series from 2003 to 2017, and his other films include Elizabeth (1998), Frida (2002), Finding Nemo (2003), Munich (2005) and The Book Thief (2013). On television he won an Emmy for The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004) and was Emmy-nominated for Genius (2017), while his Broadway debut in Exit the King brought him a Tony Award.

A first
Geoffrey Rush is the only Australian to have won the Triple Crown of Acting, taking an Academy Award, a Primetime Emmy Award and a Tony Award.
Getting ready for a role
Rush learned piano until he was fourteen, then took lessons again thirty years later for Shine, choosing to play most of the piano himself instead of using a hand double.
A role that slipped away
James L. Brooks brought Rush to Los Angeles to try out for Simon Bishop in As Good as It Gets and gave him the role, but Rush said no, so Greg Kinnear got it.
Early training
Rush trained in mime, movement and theater at L'École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq in Paris, where he studied under master clown Philippe Gaulier.
First role
Rush was talent-spotted by the Queensland Theatre Company while at university and began his career with it in 1971, appearing in 17 productions.
Languages
Rush spoke his lines in Polish for a cameo in The Potato Peeler, a commercial for the Melbourne International Film Festival, playing a Polish farmer.
