Plot summary
Mystery writer Mort Rainey is living in a secluded cabin on Tashmore Lake after his break-up with his wife Amy, who is now with Ted Milner. Depressed and unable to write, he has put off signing the divorce papers. A man calling himself John Shooter comes to the cabin and says Mort stole his manuscript for a story called Secret Window, and he has a copy with nearly the same words. Shooter gives Mort three days to prove the story is his own, and warns him not to call the police. Mort hires private investigator Ken Karsch to deal with the visitor, while he searches for the magazine issue that first printed his story.

- According to director David Koepp on the DVD commentary, the ocean footage seen during Mort's restless night on the couch was not shot for this film at all: it was extra b-roll taken from The Lost World: Jurassic Park.
