Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Penélope Cruz discovered she was pregnant as filming approached, and director Rob Marshall and producer Jerry Bruckheimer feared she would pull out; she stayed, and the shoot was rearranged to film her scenes before she began to show.
- The film's British financial statements revealed total expenditures of £240.7 million ($410.6 million) by 2013, with Disney receiving a $32.1 million rebate from the British government, making it the most expensive film ever made to date.
- Casting the mermaids required actresses with natural breasts, no implants; producer Bruckheimer told EW, "I don't think they had breast augmentation in the 1700s," so the casting people wanted "real people."
- Producer Bruckheimer described the film as the first major "exterior movie" to be shot in 3D, noting that Avatar had been made mostly in sound stages.
- The mermaids were portrayed above water by eight model-actresses, with 22 synchronized swimming athletes and stuntwomen in motion-capture suits later replaced by digital mermaids; their scaly look drew on jellyfish and ballet tutus.
- When Keith Richards reprised his cameo from At World's End, he and Depp tried to persuade Mick Jagger to join Richards as a pirate elder.
- Security at the United Kingdom shoot was breached when a celebrity impersonator dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow got into filming at the Old Royal Naval College.
- Composer Hans Zimmer gave the score a rock 'n' roll sound because he felt "pirates were the rock 'n' rollers of many, many years ago," and added Spanish elements, working with Mexican guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela and a tango written by Penélope Cruz's brother Eduardo.
