Plot summary
Barnabas Collins grows up in Collinsport, the fishing town his family founded in Maine. Engaged to Josette, he ends an affair with the household servant Angelique Bouchard, who is secretly a witch. Angelique curses him into a vampire, and he is buried in a tomb. In 1972 a construction crew opens the tomb, and Barnabas returns to Collinwood Manor, where Elizabeth Collins Stoddard heads a family fishing business near bankruptcy. Victoria Winters arrives to tutor the young David Collins. Barnabas offers the family the manor's hidden treasure and his protection, and finds in Victoria a likeness to Josette, while Angelique still runs a rival seafood company in town.

- Johnny Depp had been obsessed with the Dark Shadows soap opera since childhood, called playing Barnabas Collins a dream, and it was Depp who ended up persuading Tim Burton to direct.
- The small part played by Christopher Lee was his 200th film appearance, and the fifth and final time he worked with Burton.
- Jonathan Frid, star of the original Dark Shadows series, makes a cameo appearance but died shortly before the film was released, and one of its producers, Richard D. Zanuck, died two months after it came out.
- For the part, Depp tried to emulate the rigidity and elegance of Jonathan Frid's original portrayal, while also drawing inspiration from Max Schreck's performance in Nosferatu.
- Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to the Gothic soap opera from the estate of its creator, Dan Curtis, in July 2007, and the project's development was then delayed by the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike.
