Plot summary

In a Russian village, Fegele Abramovich waits with her grandmother for the father who has gone ahead to America and promised to send for them. After the village is burned in a pogrom, Fegele escapes and is taken onto a boat bound for Britain. There an official gives her the name Suzie and places her with a foster family, and a teacher who hears her sing in Yiddish teaches her English. Grown up, she joins a singing and dancing troupe in Paris and shares an apartment with Lola, a dancer from Moscow. She meets Cesar, a Romani horseman.
