Biography

Helena Bonham Carter is a British actress known for playing eccentric women in blockbusters, independent films and period dramas. Born in London, she had no formal acting training and entered the field by winning a national writing contest, making her professional debut at 16 in a television commercial. Her breakthrough came as Lucy Honeychurch in the Forster adaptation A Room with a View (1986), and she played the title role in Lady Jane (1986). Early period roles typecast her as an English rose, but she later took parts such as Kate Croy in the film The Wings of the Dove (1997), which earned her an Academy Award nomination, and Marla Singer in Fight Club (1999). She played Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter series from 2007 to 2011 and won a BAFTA for The King's Speech (2010) as Queen Elizabeth. Other films include Sweeney Todd (2007), Les Misérables (2012), Cinderella (2015), Ocean's Eight (2018) and Enola Holmes (2020).
