Plot summary
In 1934 the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot closes a case of theft in Jerusalem and means to travel back to London. His friend Bouc finds him a berth on the Simplon-route Orient Express, whose passengers include the widow Caroline Hubbard, the American businessman Edward Ratchett with his valet Edward Masterman and secretary Hector MacQueen, and Princess Natalia Dragomiroff with her maid Hildegarde Schmidt. Ratchett has received threatening letters and asks Poirot to guard him for the rest of the trip; Poirot refuses to work for a man he finds suspicious. An avalanche throws the engine off the rails and strands the train. That night Poirot hears noises in the corridor beside his cabin; in the morning Ratchett is found stabbed a dozen times, and Poirot and Bouc begin to hunt the murderer.

- In June 2016 Angelina Jolie entered talks to play Mrs Caroline Hubbard in the film, but she passed on the role, and Charlize Theron, among others, was then in consideration for it.
- The production built a full prop train, a replica of the French SNCF steam train with engine, tender, restaurant car, baggage car and bar; after filming it was bought and repurposed into a tearoom experience in the Lake District.
- The film used some of the same 65 mm film cameras as Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk; the two were among the very few shot on 65 mm since Branagh's Hamlet in 1996, and the only ones released in 2017.
- Pfeiffer recorded an original song called "Never Forget" for the film's finale, and Branagh, then in post-production thousands of miles away, was Skyped in to watch her record it.
- In January 2017 Manuel Garcia-Rulfo joined the cast, replacing Michael Peña, who had dropped out of the project; Willem Dafoe joined the film that same month.
