Plot summary
The barber Benjamin Barker comes back to London after sixteen years of exile, accompanied by a young sailor, Anthony Hope, and takes the name Sweeney Todd. He moves into his old rooms on Fleet Street, above Nellie Lovett's meat pie shop. Mrs. Lovett recognizes him and tells him what became of his wife, Lucy, and that his daughter Johanna is now Judge Turpin's ward. Todd swears revenge and reopens the barbershop; Mrs. Lovett gives him the razors he left behind. Anthony falls for Johanna at first sight, and Turpin's bailiff, Beadle Bamford, drives him off. In a public shaving contest, Todd beats the rival barber Adolfo Pirelli.

- Sweeney Todd's fake blood was colored orange rather than red so it would render correctly on the desaturated color film used, and crew members wore bin liners to keep from being stained while filming.
- In the UK, audiences walked out of the film on realizing it was a musical, and complaints that its advertisements were deliberately misleading went to both the Advertising Standards Authority and the Trading Standards agency.
- Christopher Lee, Peter Bowles, Anthony Head and five other actors were cast as ghost narrators, but their roles were cut because a March 2007 filming break, taken while Johnny Depp's daughter recovered from an illness, squeezed the schedule; Head still appears in an uncredited cameo.
- Johnny Depp, not known for his singing, took lessons in preparation for playing Sweeney Todd, a piece of casting producer Richard D. Zanuck admitted was something of a gamble.
- Tim Burton cut the show's famous opening number, "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd", asking why a chorus should sing about attending the tale when the film could simply attend it.
- For a larger, more cinematic sound, the stage musical's original orchestrator, Jonathan Tunick, re-scored the film and increased the orchestra from 27 musicians to 78.
