Biography

Dolph Lundgren is an actor, filmmaker, and martial artist who is Swedish and American. He also won European karate championships in 1980 and 1981. Born in Spånga, Stockholm, he broke through as the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky IV (1985), a role he returned to in Creed II (2018). He went on to lead more than 80 action films, among them The Punisher (1989), Masters of the Universe (1987), Red Scorpion (1988), and Showdown in Little Tokyo (1991). He played Andrew Scott in three Universal Soldier movies. In the 2000s he often appeared in direct to video releases and began directing his own projects, including Command Performance (2009), The Mechanik (2005), and Missionary Man (2007). He returned to prominence as Gunner Jensen in The Expendables (2010) and its sequels. Later credits include Aquaman (2018), Don't Kill It (2017), Castle Falls (2021), and voice work in Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) and Seal Team (2021).

  1. Getting ready for a role

    Lundgren prepared for his part in Pentathlon by training alongside the U.S. pentathlon team. That later led to his selection as the non-competing Team Leader of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Modern Pentathlon team at the Atlanta Games.

    Lundgren studied drama at the Warren Robertson Theatre Workshop in New York City, where his classmates included Andie MacDowell and Tom Hulce.

  3. A role that slipped away

    In a May 2008 interview on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Ridley Scott said Lundgren was considered for the undefeated fighter Tigris of Gaul in Gladiator, but was rejected because he did not fit in.
