Plot summary
In southern Mississippi, Gabriel is hunting when his dog opens a strange golden container and turns violent. Gabriel shoots the dog, then returns home with black eyes and kills his family. His neighbor, Marcus, shoots Gabriel and immediately develops the same black eyes, murdering his own family. Demon hunter Jebediah Woodley hears about the killings and travels to the town. FBI agent Evelyn Pierce, who grew up nearby, is assigned to investigate possible domestic terrorism. She has Woodley detained as mentally ill, but after a witness describes the killer's black eyes, she releases him. Woodley explains that the demon possesses whoever kills its last host. The two arm themselves and set out to track the demon.

- Principal photography on Don't Kill It lasted 17 days in Lexington, Mississippi, over the 2015 Christmas holiday season. Director Mike Mendez said the crew had only 12 days to prepare and he was lucky to get five or six hours of sleep a night.
- Kristina Klebe, who plays FBI agent Evelyn Pierce, was called by director Mike Mendez about two weeks before shooting. Despite having worked with him on Tales of Halloween and The Last Heist, she still had to put herself on tape, and heard back only four days before filming.
- The town Don't Kill It first wanted to film in refused to grant permission, so the production crew moved 20 miles out. Director Mike Mendez said the town they used had never had a movie shot there and was one of the poorest suburbs in America.
- Dolph Lundgren was cast as demon hunter Jebediah Woodley, his debut in the horror genre, and found out about the role nine to ten months before shooting began.
- Don't Kill It was made for less than $1 million, with $15,000 of that raised on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo.
