Plot summary
In 1969, a U.S. Army team secures a Vietnamese village, and Private Luc Deveraux finds his squad and the villagers dead. His sergeant, Andrew Scott, holds a young couple hostage and orders him to shoot the girl. Deveraux refuses, and the two men shoot each other. Both bodies are frozen and listed as missing in action. Decades later a secret military program reanimates them with other dead soldiers as UniSols, an elite counter-terrorism unit. A neural serum keeps them obedient and their past buried. While the team overwhelms communist terrorists, Deveraux sees two hostages who resemble the villagers and begins recalling his former life, and disobeys the control team. TV journalist Veronica Roberts slips onto the base seeking a story on the project.

- Andrew Davis was hired to direct and co-write and had got as far as pre-production and location scouting in Mexico when, in February 1991, Carolco executive Mario Kassar fired him over the budget: the initial script called for extensive computer-generated effects for the glowing biomechanical cyborgs.
- At the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren were involved in a verbal altercation that almost turned physical. On his website, Lundgren confirmed it had been a publicity stunt to promote the film.
- Universal Soldier closed the book on a piece of cinema technology: it was the last film to use the multichannel surround-sound format Cinema Digital Sound.
