Plot summary
Near Christmas in 1999, workers tunneling under New York break through into a hidden Templar burial chamber. Karen Goodleaf, a Mohawk archaeologist, is called in to examine the chamber and its contents, which include a Celtic skeleton and a key. The key opens a gateway to Hell that can be unsealed when a millennium ends, and the Knights Templar, the order that has guarded it for a thousand years, learn that a demonic spirit known as the Minion is coming for it. The Templars send Lukas Sadorov, a former Spetsnaz soldier, to New York. He takes the key from the Minion's host, and when Karen catches up with him he says he is a Templar; she insists on coming along.
