Plot summary
At the start of the 1982 Tour de France, JuJu Peppi, an Italian cyclist, grabs at a spectator and sets off a pileup that becomes a brawl, and the race is postponed. Police turn up narcotics, and UCI president Ditmer Klerken is found to have taken payments from most of the competitors to skip preliminary drug testing. The UCI lets the Tour continue with the five riders who did not pay. They are Peppi; Marty Hass, an American-born Nigerian cyclist resented at home for representing the country; French rider Adrian Baton; Slim Robinson, a nephew of Jackie Robinson who wants to do in cycling what his uncle did in baseball; and Austrian Gustav Ditters, who gained muscle through steroids. The five plan to rotate at the front, letting the rest draft and save energy for the finish.
