Plot summary
Boston, 1977. Matt Sorenson, a onetime police officer who had left the city, comes back for the funeral of Michael, his younger brother. Michael's body was found in the water, bound as if for bondage play and bearing cuts and stab wounds, several of them inflicted after he died. Matt sets out to identify the killer. He suspects "Big Jim" Conway, a construction magnate whom Michael had fought over a subway project. He is also drawn to Irene, Michael's widow of six months. Once more men are found dead the same way, each photographed with a masked sex worker, the press nickname her Jill the Ripper, and Matt pushes himself into the underground scene of bondage and discipline.
