Plot summary
On a stormy night in Maine in 1985, lighthouse keeper Thomas Curry takes in Atlanna, queen of Atlantis, after she washes up wounded on the shore. Thomas and Atlanna fall in love, and their son Arthur can speak with sea creatures. When Atlantean soldiers come for Atlanna, she returns to Atlantis to keep her family safe and leaves Nuidis Vulko to train Arthur. Years later Arthur, known as Aquaman, learns that his half-brother Orm rules Atlantis and wants the seven underwater kingdoms to attack the surface. Mera, princess of Xebel and Orm's betrothed, refuses to help Orm and asks Arthur to stop him. After a tidal wave from Orm nearly drowns Thomas, Arthur joins Mera and dives into the sea.

- Actor Santiago Cabrera had already been cast as Aquaman for Justice League: Mortal, which would have been the character's cinematic debut with George Miller directing, but that film was canceled in 2008 after delays stemming from the 2007-08 Writers Guild of America strike.
- Industrial Light & Magic's environment team created over 200 buildings, including the signature jellyfish buildings, and laid over 7,000 buildings in districts covering almost 600 square miles for the action to travel through, then built over 150,000 ships to fill the traffic lanes leading into Atlantis.
- Roughly 700 shots needed high-detail hair simulation. Hair simulations normally use guide strands to influence the movement of groups of strands, but that did not look right flowing underwater, so ILM ended up simulating strands individually, which required heavy computations.
- One name came up twice before the job was filled: Peter Jackson was approached on two separate occasions to direct the film, and he declined both times.
