Plot summary

Strange phenomena trouble the emperor Tiberius: an earthquake and a sky that darkens like an eclipse. His astrologers read the omens as the fall of the old gods and the rise of a new kingdom in the East. Tiberius calls Tito Valerio Tauro, Rome's most prominent investigator, back from exile with an offer: establish the truth about the death sentence passed on a Judean rabbi named Jesus of Nazareth, whom his followers say has risen from the dead, and his name will be restored. Tauro trusts only reason and takes the resurrection for a hoax staged for the credulous. In Jerusalem he meets Governor Pilate, who maneuvers between Pharisee and Zealot factions, along with Saul of Tarsus, Judas of Iscariot, Simon Peter and a young believer named Tabitha.
