Plot summary
Lieutenant Frank Ross flies a P-51 Mustang as the American advance reaches the German border in late 1944. Hitler sends a new jet fighter into the air, and Ross meets it in a battle he cannot win. He ejects and comes down behind enemy lines, then waits for a rescue team to find him. A German ambush falls on an American tanker patrol nearby. Second Lieutenant Robert Hayes leads that patrol, with Sergeant A.J. 'Red' McCarron and Private Michael 'Salty' Buttons, soldiers of the 761st Tank Battalion, the Black Panthers. The patrol becomes the rescue mission, and its men must set aside their differences to work together.
