Plot summary

Drago's manager Koloff brings the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago to the United States and promotes him as proof of Soviet superiority. Drago, billed as The Siberian Express, travels with his wife Ludmilla, a champion swimmer, and a staff of trainers. Apollo Creed, the former heavyweight champion and a friend of Rocky Balboa, wants back in the ring and challenges Drago to an exhibition. Rocky doubts that Apollo, who has been away from the sport for years, can handle an opponent of that size, but he agrees to help train him, working with Apollo's trainer Duke Evers. The exhibition is booked for the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas.

  • One forceful punch to Stallone's chest slammed his heart against his breastbone and made it swell; with labored breathing and a blood pressure over 200 he was flown from the set in Vancouver to Saint John's Regional Medical Center in Santa Monica and spent eight days in intensive care.
  • Dolph Lundgren tossed Carl Weathers into the corner of the boxing ring during filming; Weathers shouted profanities, announced he was calling his agent and quitting, and a four-day work stoppage followed until Stallone made the two reconcile and Lundgren agreed to tone down his aggressiveness.
  • The robot was written into the movie after the same machine had been used to help treat Stallone's autistic son.
  • Timothy Anderson developed a treatment for Rocky IV on spec and sued when the studio passed on it and the resulting script came out similar; the court held his treatment was an unauthorised derivative of the characters Stallone had created in Rocky I through III.
  • Peter Cetera said he originally wrote his best-selling solo single "Glory of Love" as the end title for this film, but United Artists passed on it and the song was used instead as the theme for The Karate Kid Part II.
