Plot summary
King Leopold of Belgium has claimed the Congo and sent his envoy Léon Rom to secure more minerals. In England, John Clayton, the man once called Tarzan, lives with his wife Jane. Leopold invites him to Boma, and the American George Washington Williams, who suspects that Leopold's men are enslaving Congolese, wants him to accept and to take him along as a witness. John refuses at first. Jane comes too, missing the country she once lived in. In the Congo, Rom is pushing into the territory of Chief Mbonga, and John and Jane are welcomed by the Kuba village where they once lived.

- For a while the producer Jerry Weintraub wanted the swimmer Michael Phelps to play the title role, feeling that he was the heir apparent to Johnny Weissmuller, the actor who had famously played Tarzan and was also a prominent competitive swimmer; Weintraub reportedly changed his mind after watching Phelps host Saturday Night Live for only two minutes.
- A working waterfall and a 100-foot-long collapsible pier were assembled at Warner Bros.' Leavesden studios, where seven versions of the African jungle were constructed; Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire stood in for Greystoke Manor, and a cedar tree at Highclere Castle was the setting for an early pivotal scene between Tarzan and Jane.
- To get in Tarzan shape, Skarsgård spent four months in a training regimen before filming started and gained 24 pounds; part of his training was movement work with the choreographer Wayne McGregor.
