Trailer

Plot summary

A 1928 excavation at Giza uncovers cover stones carved with Egyptian hieroglyphs and, beneath them, a metallic ring. Catherine Langford, there with her father Paul, takes a gold amulet from the found artifacts. In 1994 the elderly Catherine brings Egyptologist Daniel Jackson to a classified Air Force installation in Colorado, where the stones are kept. Jackson corrects earlier translations and finds that six star constellations serve as coordinates, with Earth's symbol as the point of origin. Colonel Jack O'Neil commands the project. Once the chevrons lock, the gate opens a wormhole, and a probe returns pictures of a matching ring somewhere else. Catherine gives Jackson her amulet before he joins O'Neil and his team through the gate, arriving at a temple at the foot of a pyramid on a desert planet.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Stargate (1994)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Reluctant to continue acting after his debut in The Crying Game, Jaye Davidson took the role only after his request for $1 million in pay was accepted, and Stargate proved to be his final major film before he retired from acting.
  • The funnel of water that precedes the Stargate opening was filmed by discharging an air cannon into a water tank; Jeff Kleiser recalled that nobody knew the right pressure, so they tried 100 lb, which evacuated all the water onto the camera and everybody, when 1 lb turned out to be about right.
  • Kurt Russell, who in real life served in the California Air National Guard's 146th Tactical Airlift Wing at Van Nuys, turned down the role multiple times until it was realized he had been sent an early version of the script; the completed shooting script won him over.
  • In January 1995, high school teacher Omar Zuhdi sued the makers of Stargate, claiming they had stolen the plot and story of his 1984 film script Egyptscape as the basis of the film; the suit was later settled out of court.
  • To keep within the budget, the producers put stick figures dressed with cloth in the distant desert so that they would appear as humans.
  • At the time, the film set a record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a film released in the month of October, and it held that record for four years until Antz took it in 1998.
