Plot summary
King Uther Pendragon wields the sword Excalibur against the warlock Mordred, who lays siege to Camelot. Uther's brother Vortigern covets the throne; he sacrifices his wife Elsa to sirens and takes the crown, while Uther's son Arthur escapes by boat to Londinium, where prostitutes raise him. As a grown man Arthur runs with Rubio and Percival and looks after Lucy, a prostitute, until the Blacklegs seize him. Vortigern has every man in the city brought to a sword lodged in stone. Arthur draws it, is overwhelmed by its power, and wakes in Vortigern's dungeon, where the king tells him who his father was and orders his execution. Merlin's acolyte, the Mage, and Uther's former general Bedivere rescue him, though Arthur refuses to join their fight.

- Warner's next attempt at a King Arthur film was an Arthurian cinematic universe that would span six films, and for this endeavour they hired director Guy Ritchie, who had himself wanted to make a King Arthur movie for several years. According to The Guardian, the script soon became 'a strange Frankenstein's monster-style screenplay' incorporating elements from several of the unproduced Arthurian scripts.
- Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey's character was written as Guinevere, but that connection was cut during production and the character became simply "the Mage"; star Charlie Hunnam said the change came from both the filmmaking process and the actor's own instincts about the part.
