Plot summary
Solomon Vandy, a Mende fisherman in Sierra Leone, is pulled from his village of Shenge when Revolutionary United Front rebels overrun it, and separated from his wife and children. Sent to a diamond field under Captain Poison, he finds an enormous pink stone and buries it before government troops attack. In Freetown, he is jailed alongside Danny Archer, a Rhodesian gunrunner imprisoned for smuggling diamonds into Liberia for his employer, Colonel Coetzee. Archer learns of the pink stone and arranges Solomon's release, offering to help him find his family if Solomon leads him to the diamond. Together they approach Maddy Bowen, an American journalist, who agrees to help them travel to Kono in return for what Archer knows about the illegal diamond trade.

- David Hasselhoff was offered the lead role of Danny Archer but turned it down because he did not like the direction of the character, and Leonardo DiCaprio was given the role instead.
- Leavitt researched the diamond industry at great length before writing, calling himself a stickler for immersing himself in research, and wrote the film assuming it would offend the industry, particularly De Beers, aware that he could be sued by De Beers and other powerful mining corporations.
- The film's ending conference refers to a real meeting held in Kimberley, South Africa, in 2000, which led to the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme for certifying the origin of rough diamonds; that scheme has since been mostly abandoned as ineffective.
