Plot summary
In Vatican City, Vicar Imani opens the file on Angela Holmes for Cardinal Mattias Bruun, an American woman the Church believes carries an evil spirit inside her. Two months before, in Los Angeles, Angela's father Roger and her boyfriend Pete Smith throw her a surprise birthday party. She cuts her hand and is taken to a hospital, where she meets Father Lozano. An injection there leads to an infection, and a seizure at home puts her under hospital care. Days later she is released, but on the way home she grabs the wheel of the taxi and the crash leaves her in a coma for forty days. Life support is about to be withdrawn when she wakes, apparently healthy. She then begins to harm the people around her, and Father Lozano sends her for psychiatric care.
