Biography

Born in Newport, Wales, Michael Sheen is a Welsh actor and presenter who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. He worked mainly in theater during the 1990s, taking roles in Romeo and Juliet, Peer Gynt, The Seagull, The Homecoming, and Henry V, and earned Olivier Award nominations for Amadeus, Look Back in Anger, and Caligula. In the 2000s he turned to screen acting and became known for playing Tony Blair in The Deal, The Queen (2006), and The Special Relationship (2010), which brought BAFTA and Emmy nominations. He was nominated for a BAFTA for Fantabulosa! and starred as David Frost in Frost/Nixon and Brian Clough in The Damned United (2009). Later films include Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009), The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009), Tron: Legacy (2010), and Midnight in Paris (2011). He also played Hamlet at the Young Vic and received a Golden Globe nomination for Masters of Sex.

  1. First role

    Sheen's first professional role came while he was still in his final year at RADA, playing in When She Danced at the Globe Theatre in 1991, which he later called a big break that took him from a movement class to a read-through with Vanessa Redgrave.

  2. Early training

    Sheen trained at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after moving to London in 1988, and in his second year he was granted the Laurence Olivier Bursary by the Society of London Theatre.

  3. Getting ready for a role

    To prepare for the role, Sheen dropped about 35 pounds, watched archival footage and read Williams' published diaries. His work earned him an RTS Award for Best Actor.

  4. Behind the camera

    Sheen co-founded the Thin Language Theatre Company in 1991 to further Welsh theater, and directed Badfinger, starring Rhys Ifans, at the Donmar Warehouse in 1997.
