Plot summary
A biochemical weapons catastrophe killed most of mankind and made the air toxic. The U.S. government built a few makeshift bunkers underground, where a handful of scientists sleep in cryogenic chambers until the air is safe again. Each bunker is kept up by a pair of maintenance workers who wake twice a year for two-hour shifts of routine checks and inspections. Cartwright and Bauer are the pair at one bunker, working through their usual tasks while Cartwright sees visions of his wife, Abby. A fire destroys Cartwright's sleeping chamber.
