Plot summary
Zed, a professional safe-cracker, travels to Paris to help Eric, a friend from childhood, with a bank heist. In the taxi to his hotel the driver offers to find him a sex worker for the evening, and Zoe arrives just as he emerges from the shower. The two sleep together and talk warmly; she says she studies art and holds a very boring day job. Eric bursts in, orders Zoe out and takes Zed to his residence to meet his friends. There Eric lays out the plan: Bastille Day will close nearly every business in the city except one holding bank, which they intend to rob. That night Zed joins Eric and his friends at a jazz club, where Eric reveals that intravenous drug use gave him HIV.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Killing Zoe (1993)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The screenplay came from a chance discovery: while scouting locations for Reservoir Dogs, the crew found a bank, so producer Lawrence Bender called writer Roger Avary and asked if he had any bank-heist scripts. Avary wrote the Killing Zoe screenplay in about a week or two.
- Killing Zoe was the first feature film to use the newly developed Otto Nemenz Swing & Tilt lenses, employed backwards from their intended job of perspective correction so they would instead distort perspective during the film's heroin sequences.
- Although the story is set in Paris, director Roger Avary shot the film almost entirely in Los Angeles; only the opening and closing credit shots and a few brief driving clips were actually filmed in France.
