Plot summary
Jake Tyler, his mother Margot and his younger brother Charlie have left Iowa for Orlando, Florida, a move meant to further Charlie's tennis career. Classmates taunt Jake about his father, who was killed in a drunk-driving crash, and a video of Jake fighting a football player in Iowa is passed around his new school. He tries to help Max Cooperman, who appears to be getting beaten up, and learns that the fight was a consensual mixed martial arts bout. Classmate Baja Miller invites Jake to a party, where Ryan McCarthy, the school's MMA champion and Baja's boyfriend, draws him into a fight. Max introduces Jake to mixed martial arts and to instructor Jean Roqua, who takes him on as a student and forbids fighting outside the gym.
