Plot summary
Hiccup and his Night Fury, Toothless, explore beyond Berk, charting country nobody has mapped. His father, Stoick the Vast, wants him to take up the chieftainship, but Hiccup doubts he is ready. Checking a burned forest, Hiccup and Astrid, his girlfriend, are set upon by trappers of dragons. Their leader, Eret, sells captured dragons to Drago Bludvist, a warlord building an army of them. The pair escape to Berk with word of Drago, and Stoick readies the village for war. Stoick recalls a gathering of chieftains where Drago offered safety from dragons to anyone who served him; those who refused were attacked, and Stoick alone survived. Hiccup will not accept that war must come and sets off with Toothless to find Drago.

SPOILER
An early draft had Gobber the Belch killed by the brainwashed Toothless instead of Stoick the Vast, but Guillermo del Toro, who had enjoyed the first film, suggested killing Stoick instead, as Stoick had "exhausted" his narrative contribution and would be a "crutch" for Hiccup if he were to become chief.- Dean DeBlois, who co-directed the first film, agreed to return only on condition that he be allowed to make a trilogy, and cited The Empire Strikes Back and My Neighbor Totoro as his main inspirations, the expanded scope of the former being particularly influential.
- DeBlois, DreamWorks head of feature development Gregg Taylor and cinematographer Roger Deakins, who served as visual consultant, broke off from the group to visit Svalbard and see polar bears in the wild with the assistance of armed guides.
- It was the first DreamWorks Animation film to use "scalable multicore processing", developed with Hewlett-Packard, which Katzenberg called "the next revolution in filmmaking" and which let artists work on rich, complex images in real time instead of waiting eight hours for results the next day.
- Composer John Powell, who earned his first Academy Award nomination for the original film, recorded the sequel's score in April 2014 at Abbey Road Studios in London with a 120-piece orchestra, a 100-voice choir and Highland bagpipes played by pipers from the Scottish group Red Hot Chilli Pipers.
- Its $25.9 million opening weekend in China was the biggest ever for an animated film in the country, surpassing the record previously held by Kung Fu Panda 2.
