Plot summary

At a ball celebrating his engagement to Ethne Eustace, young British officer Harry Faversham learns that his regiment will be sent to Egyptian-ruled Sudan to rescue General Charles Gordon. Uneasy about the war, he gives up his commission. His father disowns him, and three friends, along with Ethne, hand him a white feather as a mark of cowardice; the engagement ends. When word comes that his best friend Jack Durrance and the regiment are under attack by the followers of Muhammad Ahmad, the self-proclaimed Mahdi, Harry sets out for the Sudan by himself. There he joins forces with Abou Fatma, a mercenary warrior, and travels in the guise of an Arab.
