Plot summary
Prospera is the duchess of Milan. When her husband the duke dies, her brother Antonio accuses her of killing him with witchcraft and seizes her title, then has her set adrift in a boat with her daughter Miranda, who is three. Mother and child survive and reach an island whose only inhabitant is Caliban, a human beast. Prospera enslaves him, frees the spirit Ariel and takes the island for herself, raising Miranda there. Twelve years pass. Alonso, the King of Naples, sails home from his daughter's wedding with his son Ferdinand and with Antonio and Sebastian aboard. Prospera, seeing her chance for revenge, has Ariel help her raise the tempest that wrecks the ship and strands them on her island.

- Julie Taymor turned Prospero, a male in Shakespeare's original play, into the female Prospera, explaining that she "didn't really have a male actor that excited me in mind", while a couple of phenomenal females, Helen Mirren among them, made her ask what would happen if the role became female.
- When Disney sold Miramax Films to Filmyard Holdings on December 3, 2010, Disney took over distribution of the film itself, through its Touchstone Pictures label.
